R&B’s new star
This week our focus is on Mahalia – the Leicester born superstar-in-waiting, who last month sold out Shepherd’s Bush Empire at just 20 years old. She performs on the Saturday on Standon Calling’s main stage – we look at her journey since writing her first song at age 8…
Major Label Signing
At 13 years old, Mahalia was signed to a major record label after Ed Sheeran tweeted about her after one of his shows and she has spent the past 7 years working out her own sound, as well as featuring on tracks with the likes of Rudimental & Kojey Radical.
Back Up Plan
After moving to Birmingham to study at The Brit’s sister school, Ormiston Academy, she chose to take acting classes in the day but by night was supporting the likes of Ed Sheeran. After releasing a few singles to little fanfare, Mahalia admits she was ready to admit defeat and give up on music altogether. She had left London to move back home, feeling uninspired and describing the music industry as unbearable.
Showing her colours
However, in late 2017 , a track about drunk-dialling her ex ‘Sober’ was the track that became her breakthrough hit when performed for the YouTube channel Colors – the track now has over 28 million views. She grew up inspired by Amy Winehouse and fellow Standon Calling 2019 performer, Kate Nash.
One To Watch
That success continued into 2018 which saw her win several awards, including YoutTube ‘One’s To Watch’, as well as being shortlisted for the BBC’s Brit List and a US tour with Ella Mai. Mahalia brings her soulful tones to Standon Calling, catch her live just before she releases her debut album.
