The Flying Scotsman
As one of 2019’s fastest rising stars, it’s only fitting that we take a look at singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi’s ascent to the top of the charts ahead of his performance at Standon Calling. So, what do we know about the soon to be superstar?
Beating the biggest names to top spot
Capaldi’s heart-tugging ballad ‘Someone You Loved’ managed to fend off competition from pop royalty including Ariana Grande and Sam Smith to land him his first ever number 1, rather fittingly, on Valentine’s Day this year. The track has gone on to accumulate 101 million streams on Spotify and is set to remain at the summit of the charts for 4 weeks. Quite an achievement for the 22 year old.
The BRIT Award nomination
He may not have won the Critics Choice Award at the BRITs this year – but the nomination signals just how far Capaldi has come in his short career. He shouldn’t be too displeased though – he recently scooped MTV’s Brand New For 2019 award and was also included in the BBC’s Sound of 2018 industry poll. Swings and roundabouts, eh.
Support slots galore
One of Lewis’ first big breaks came when he supported Rag’n’Bone Man on his European arena tour in 2017 – something that the Scot branded a “class” experience. He has since gone on to support Sam Smith and Bastille over the past year – and it’s recently been announced that he will be warming up for Ed Sheeran in August.
25 Million streams without a label
The Bathgate native was also the fastest unsigned act ever to hit 25 million streams on Spotify back in 2017, with his track ‘Bruises’. Ultimately, this was a testament to the quality of Capaldi’s output, as he was able to garner this kind of attention without the backing of a major label. An incredible feat.
A sold out Uk tour
The scale of the enigmatic singer’s popularity has increased at a rapid rate since he bounded onto the scene two years ago. This year there was another watershed moment in his career as his UK tour sold out in a matter of seconds. Do yourselves a favour and make sure you’re there to witness him dazzle Standon this summer!
