New Music Friday

Find out what music news has caught our attention this week!

It’s Grammy time!

The Grammy nominations were announced earlier this week and as always there were a few surprises thrown in there, and some very well deserved artists who have been left out … Rosalia *cough cough*

Beyoncé is leading the race with nine nominations! Closely followed by Kendrick Lamar, Adele, Brandi Carlile and Mary J. Blige, DJ Khaled, Future, and Harry Styles. It will be the first time since 2017 that Beyoncé and Adele are competing against each other. Will we see a repeat of Adele tearfully calling Beyoncé “the artist of her life”? We’ll be glued to the telly on the 5th of Feb to watch it all unfold!

Phoebe Bridgers Christmas Release

This week Phoebe Bridgers has continued with her Christmas tradition and released a cover of The Handsome Family’s 2000 track, “So Much Wine”. In the past she’s covered the likes of Tom Waits’ “Day After Tomorrow”, Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December” and “7 O’Clock News / Silent Night”, alongside Fiona Apple and Matt Berninger.

Although the lyrics of the song are rather solemn and melancholic, talking through the pitfalls of alcoholism during the holidays, the contrast with the group of voices coming in at the chorus, including fiancé Paul Mescal (!) create that united feeling of warmth and celebration at Christmas time.

Rough Trade’s Albums Of The Year

List season is upon us and Rough Trade is the first to reveal their Albums Of The Year list. The full 100 strong list was voted for by staff across every branch of Rough Trade. See any on the list you could buy your dad for a Christmas present?
